BenQ Stage at the Vancouver Art Gallery
Vancouver International Jazz Festival 2005
Alan Matheson's nine piece band serves up jazz "cool and hot." Their repertoire ranges from classics by Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke to recent compositions by Matheson, Rob McKenzie and Dave Branter. They also feature some of the original arrangements played by Miles Davis's legendary “Birth of the Cool” band. The unique instrumentation of the group allows it the flexibility to sound like a roaring big band or a subtle chamber jazz ensemble. With Rob McKenzie (trombone), Julia Nolan, Dave Branter (saxophones), Chris Sigerson (piano), Russ Botten (bass), Craig Scott (drums), Dawn Haylett (French horn), Steve Toren (tuba).

Vancouver International Jazz Festival 2005
A unique collaboration revisiting the classic era of Finnish pop music (1935–55) via new arrangements by Finnish bassist Atro “Wade” Mikkola, this unique post-bop ensemble will appeal to fans of modern jazz and standards alike. Combining strong melodies with adventurous harmonies and improvisations, Muistatko shines new light on tunes that echo both the great American songbook and the melancholy strains of Finnish folk music. With Vancouver's Alan Matheson (trumpet/flugelhorn) and Craig Scott (drums), and Finland's Pekka Toivanen (saxophones) and Lasse Hirvi (piano). Thanks to E.S.E.K., Finland.
